Geography

After the two Italian isles of Sicily and Sardinia, Cyprus it is the third largest isle in the Mediterranean Sea. There are two mountain ranges in the isle, Troodos Mountains and Kyrenia Range. There is also a central plain: Mesaoria. Geopolitically, Cyprus sees itself as part of Europe, but it can be classified both as European and Middle East.

Politics

Cyprus’ conventional name is the Republic of Cyprus, it is a presidential democracy, but the north of Cyprus was self-declared Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Independence from the UK was obtained in 1960.

Economics

The economy of Cyprus became prosperous only in the 21st century and it has largely been affected by the economic crisis, for which it received substantial financial help by the European union. The market economy is dominated by the service sector such as tourism, financial, shipping and real estate.
