Red plates are also used for Lease cars/vehicles, very frustrating when you know you are being treated like a tourist and some establishments try to 'rip you off' because of the red plates.

Many thanks for your input and I am sure you are correct and I know that to be the case in UK. I have seen 12 seater Mercedes personel carriers with the red plates and I thought that the red plates were purely for self-drive hire. But to coin the phrase, "This is Cyprus".

Hi again Splishsplash,

Just returned from taking my brother & sister in law to the airport. While there I checked with a couple of the car hire firm reps and they confirmed the largest car/people carrier they hire is a 6 seater MPV (unofficially they told me it can seat 8 - at a squeeze) If you need a 12 seater minibus then it is regarded as a taxi and you would have to rent it with a driver. Self drive is a no no.

Hi Splishsplash,

Unless the rules have changed you can't hire a minibus and drive it yourself. You have to hire the driver as part of the package.

The largest 'car' available to hire is likely to be a 7 or 8 seater MPV.
