Have a look at the sites for edexcel and cambridge IGCSE- they will give you all of the information that you need. Parents must contact the boards, book and pay for the exams and are then told where they need to go to sit the exam- I believe that they need to be entered as a private student. Both websites have very helpful people who can guide you through the process.
Good Luck!

I have been searching online to gather as much information as I can and really there is a lot to trawl through. I wonder if anyone has any sites they can recommend?

You need to collect information about actually SITTING the exams. Most British Council offices offer the facility (but not for every subject or Board). No good studying the course material if the kids can't sit the exams!

Can be difficult if you want to choose subjects which incorporate a practical element (eg sciences); languages you probably have to go for the option which doesn't include an oral test!

Boards vary and subjects vary.....
