Several companies 'block out' a preset amount on transactions, regardless of the total spend. Some of the well known multi-national car hire companies do this as standard practice. Your car hire may be €150 but they will block out an additional €250 until the end of the hire period.

My husband had an account with the Bank Of Cyprus and a creid card and he never had a holding on any funds.

I had my account with the Coop in Limassol .........Main Branch and they were fantastic.

We are in the UK living now hence the only reason we changed the banks.

Dragon Warrior has offered one possible explanation.

Also the EKO petrol stations used to block €100 on people's accounts every time they used a card to buy petrol - over the counter or in the out-of-hours self-service machines. Even if they only bought ten euros worth.

I don't know if that has changed because we boycotted the EKO stations on those grounds.

I have a credit card with 1000 euros credit limit. The 1000 euros have been blocked from my savings account. They are there, but I cannot use them for as long as I will have this credit card.
