The General Register Office holds a central copy of all registrations for England and Wales. Local Register Offices also hold records of events registered in their area.

The easiest way is to go to the Citizens advice centre, which is near the old port, on the sea front main road. They can sort everything for you there- just make sure you take all your documents, including your birth certificate- beware the birth certificate needs to have your parents names on it for them to process! yes i know, I have had my birth cert. for 40 years with no problem, till i tried to get an ID card here!!!!

If you have any problem with it, there is an online site now for uk that issues replacements.
