Suzieq, as soon as the boarders opened many Turkish Cypriots moved to the South, and they now prefer it here. They move down here everyday, so obviously that must mean something.....

Suzeiq, I've interviewed a number of people who have moved from the north to the RoC.

They say work is much easier to find here; the bureaucracy is far less; and they have a far better choice (and much lower prices available) in terms of shopping for food/furniture/household goods and services here in the RoC. Plus superior medical care. They reckon the standard of property available is also better here (they cite poor build quality in the north, though you've probably seen similar complaints on this forum and others for property in the RoC!)

These people tried living in the north for periods of between 1 and 5 years, say they feel much happier here in the RoC, have a better lifestyle and would not consider going back under any circumstances

(Well, to be accurate what one couple actually said was: "We moved there because we had known the area from childhood, liked it, and were attracted by seemingly low property prices. Some of the prettiest areas on the island used to be in the north, but they are nearly all being ruined now and we found the regime oppressive. The cost of living was far higher than we expected because of all sorts of hidden extras. Work was difficult to find - not just for us but for our Turkish Cypriot friends. Unless you're employed by what passes for the government there, you don't really stand a chance. The best decision we ever made was to move down to the RoC. We wouldn't ever consider going back unless there's a settlement that creates one undivided island, with one overall administration and the freedoms and benefits we find in the RoC")
