It was only a matter of time before this happened.

When other banks started charging the Nationwide did say, something along the lines of, we have no plans to introduce such charges but it will be reviewed on a regular basis. Reading between the lines, and my cynical view of this, basically they said we'll let the other banks take the flak and when it becomes the norm and there aren't too many complaints we'll follow suit.

As ever it's worth shopping around to find the deals that best suit you. The banks rely on our apathy not to change from account to account, company to company. How often have you heard of a bank charging a long standing customer for services yet new accounts have lower transaction charges?

least its not a bank we've had a good run on [no charges] and rate is still lower than the boys!!!! club keep drawing &spending till Nov 1:
