Hi Anne Marie,

Several Dial-up services are available in the UK that require no contract. You connect via a 0844 or 0845 number and are charged by the minute, so good for intermitent use.

If you go for the WiFi option at a cafe/shop you must make sure your computer is secure, particularly as you mentioned looking online at your bank details. If you don't know how to check that your laptop is secure do you have a friend in the UK who can set it up and check for you? If not I'd be cheeky and go into a PC World or some such store and ask them to check your laptop for you, but donm't be talked into any purchases!

You may be near someone with wireless connection that you can use. We live near a cafe/shop in the UK where we can use their internet connection by paying a small fee for their password. We don't do this ourselves as we have our own connection but it is useful for people like yourself. Your laptop should tell you if there is a wireless connection near you.
