Some home owners in Souni have received bills of up to €3000.

(three thousand Euro). Compared to five or six hundred last year.

Check your year on year consumption. Keep a note of your water meter serial number. (sometimes they get 'swapped').!!!!!!!

Contest any bills you believe to be extortinate.

Read your meter regularly to look for big increases in consumtion.

Absent owners... Fit locks on all outside taps. Get someone to check consumption monthly. Keep a record! I know of one property where the irrigation malfunctioned and ran for two months.

The house subsided as a result.

The 1st thing to check is the irrigation system. Is it leaking? How often and for how long is it used? It only needs to be on for 6 months of the year.

We had a simiar problem which was mainly due to above.

You also need to control the amount people renting your villa can use.

Are they topping the pool up and watering the garden?

I was told you had to buy water by tanker for pools.

We have a 3 bedroom villa with a 6 x 3 pool. We live here all year round (just the 2 of us) and top our pool up and water the garden manually as necessary. Our last water bill was 60 euros - not a like-for-like comparison but a massive difference in price. Do you have a neighbour who could give you regular readings to give you a better idea?

HI Chuffer, your pool can lose up to 2 tons of water per week, mid summer, through evaporation. If the pool has a small leak your auto top up will work overtime. Throw it away!!! Who monitors the irrigation???????

Has anyone been helping themselves to your water????

Water meters hardly ever, ever, go wrong. Worst case senario is, they stick, so you get free water.

Check how much you are paying. Souni/Zantia, for example upped the top rate for consumption by around 300%. What was the volume of water used??

Water in Cyprus will no longer be cheap. Use it wisely!
