Why do I need to register to use SmartExpat?

Registering allows us to customise our whole website just for you. We'll personalise your entire experience based on your regions of interest, your work and personal situation and your lifestyle and you'll see things which should be of interest based on your expat profile. You can also start to network with other expats and we need you to register before you can contribute to the site or advertise anything. How do I change the name shown against my posts?

We call your visible name your display name and you can change this on your profile by clicking here:

How do I change my profile picture?

Click here to add, edit or swap your profile photo:

Hover over your profile image and click the pen icon - this will open the image editor.

You can delete your current photo by clicking the trash icon.

Profile photos need to be in jpeg, gif or png format and at least 200x200 pixels in size.

How much does premium membership cost?

Premium membership varies depending on which region you are in - we accept hundreds of currencies so we take a local exchange rate. Click here to see membership rates in your region:

What cards do you accept?

We accept most major credit cards including Visa, MasterCard, American Express, JCB, Discover, and Diners Club.

How do I unsubscribe from marketing emails and newsletters?

Unsubscribing is simple - just click the unsubscribe link at the bottom of each email, or you can change your email preferences here:

Do memberships renew?

Yes, memberships will renew automatically each year - we'll send you an email to your registered email address to remind you that this is about to happen. You can downgrade from premium membership at any time, but your membership fee is not refundable.

How do I change my email address?

You can change your email address from your profile settings page here:

How do I verify my email address?

You will receive an email asking you to verify your email address once you have created your profile.

If you don't receive this email for any reason then check your junk email folder. You can resend this email by clicking the resend link at the top of every page until you have verified.

How do I change my list of preferred regions?

You can change your favourite regions from your profile edit page here - just click the red circle next to any you wish to remove, and then add any new regions using the menu.

How do I delete my profile?

You can delete your profile at any time by clicking here: and scrolling down to the close account section. This process is not reversible so please be sure you are ready. You can also contact us via email at

What happens when I delete my profile?

You profile will be removed and no longer visible. We may still show content and information you have added to the website, but we will anonymise your name and other profile information.

Is my data safe?

We take every precaution to try and make sure your data is well protected. Including one way encryption and we have top-rate security measures in place to help protect you and your data when you use SmartExpat.

What image formats do you accept?

We accept Jpeg, gif and png images - they must be over 200x200 pixels in size.

Can I pay in another currency?

You must pay for your membership in your local currency.

You can pay as a business advertiser in multiple currencies.

What are your membership offers?

Our membership offers section is growing all the time and changes from month to month, but we are constantly approaching businesses to find the very best offers for expats across most stages of your expat journey.

How do I claim an offer?

Once you have become a member you will have access to our exclusive offers section from your profile or the main menu. Click each offer to find details of how to claim each one.

How do I cancel my subscription?

You can downgrade from premium membership at any time, but your membership fee is not refundable.

How do I subscribe to a newsletter in another region?

We'll keep you up to date with information from your favourite regions, so just add another region to subscribe. You can add up to five favourite regions, but if you want to subscribe to more newsletters just drop us a line on
