Sitting side by side with Switzerland in the East of France is Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. A gastronomic paradise, the region is responsible for giving us culinary delights like Beef Bourguignon, Comté cheese, Dijon mustard and Burgundy wine. With Besançon and the region’s capital Dijon, totalling only about 250,000 residents, it’s best-suited for those who want to escape from big city life.

Bourgogne-Franche-Comté is in fact the 2nd least populated region on the French mainland. With 17.3% of jobs being related to industry, it is also France’s most industrial region.

Dijon mustard is no longer made in the city of the same name. Since 2009 it's been produced in a factory in the neighbouring Chevigny-Saint-Saveur.
