I don't know why everyone is banging on about weight, it is nothing to do with my original questions, which appear to have been answered.

Strange that a Marie doesn't know the trailer regs!

Up to 500 kg unbraked trailer including load = Same number as the towing vehicle, vehicle insurance should cover towing, best to inform them to be on the safe side. Insurance is unlikely to cover the contents of the trailer however.

From 500kg to 750 kg unbraked trailer including load. Must have separate registration and separate insurance cover, not very expensive, ours costs about €25 a year, choice of whether the load is covered or not according to the company and how much you want to pay.

A trailer over 750 kg must have brakes, separate registation, insurance etc.

Lighting requirements: Two red rear lights, fog rear light on the left hand side, two triangular red reflectors at the rear, square orange reflectors at the side and white reflectors at the front. Two rear stop lights if the trailer is over 500 kilogrammes or if the trailer masks the lights of the towing vehicle. A reversing light is not obligatory.

Our 750 kg unbraked trailer bought new in France also has two white lights facing forwards at the front.

weight apart, why not go to your nearest bricolage/motor spares shop and buy a ready-made light board before you go anywhere.. if the road to the tip not a straight line, it is in everyone's interests.

Taken from a recent thread.

Your trailer should have a manufacturers plate somewhere which gives the maximum weights. If the gross weight(trailer + load) exceeds 500Kg then it needs to be registered and have it's own carte Grise and insurance. Below that weight it doesn't and carries the same number plate as the towing vehicle.
