Thanks to everyone for the replies. We have visited the garage this morning and they are happy to do all the paperwork for us and arrange for the scrap people in Quimperle to take the car.

Most garages will take it off your hands and do the paperwork, if you can drive it there, but they won't give you anything for it.

If it is already at a garage being diagnosed, just tell them you want to scrap it. They'll need the carte grise and a copy of your passport.

Search your Pages Jaunes for the nearest "autocasse".  If you are within their range of operation they will collect it for nothing and take care of the paperwork.  If you can take it to them you will get paid something for it.  I received €85 for a Peugeot 406 that I drove into their yard.

There are a number of scrapyards about that will take them  but you don't  say where you are?
