I think it is a case of which type your UK card is. I have never had a problem with my cards - credit and debit which are Barclays all over the EU except in Luxenbourg and Germany where many areas will only take Maestro cards.

I have had problems with a UK card numerous times - and my friends keep a French card because they encountered exactly this problem. It seems some people are not having this problem but I would be prepared for it.

It's getting more common for UK cards to be accepted but it's a bit random, couldn't even say that a UK card was acceptable at a particular chain of supermarkets or fuel stations.  I suppose it's all down to when they update their systems, so I wouldn't bank on it.
