Unfortunately not. A Sky+ box will only record if it has an active contract for the 'paid for' channels.

You can still use it to view the free channels, and if it is a HD box, you will receive the free HD channels too.

To record the free to air channels you will need to purchase a Humax receiver, or similar.

It would seem that there's probably a problem with our subscription.  Wonder if we cancel the subs. just use the Freeview channels, is it then possible to record programmes from the Freeview on the Sky box?

You say 'Sky channels not available' -- None of them or just the paid for ones?

Besides the check leads, unplug and wait procedure, have you tried calling Sky (from a mobile number) to ask if they have a problem with your account (etc)?

If no problems their end your box could be on the blink. Buy another box and pair it up with the card. Cost is about 30e for a 2nd hand Sky+ box.

You could also do a Google search to see what other people have said about the problem and if they managed to cure it.

Thank you for replying, sorry for the delay in getting back.  In answer to your questions:

It used to allow us to put the R symbol on a programme, although it then failed to record, but now receiving following message "For your information Sky + playback and recording are not available go to Sky viewing etc. for assistance."   We cleared all the recordings because we thought memory might have been the problem.   Sky channels not available.   Have tried disconnecting the cable.   We have black Sky box.

Is it giving you an on screen message when you try to record?

Can you play your existing recordings?

Have you view the Sky contract channels?

Have you pulled the power cable out, counted to 10 and plugged it back in again?

Is it a white box or a black one?
