Hi there bit confused , if you say you closed the account several years ago did you move house then as well ? If you didn't move you would have had an annual letter of details of the policy ..  And as others have said if you did not cancel in good form the insurance it runs on and is due for payment

Insurance policies in France do not just lapse, like they do in the UK if you don't pay the renewal. In France insurance remains in force until you formally cancel it. If you didn't cancel it correctly then it will have remained in force and you will owe the premium. Unfortunately since the debt collector has obviously tracked you down, I think your best option is to pay asap, because the law is not on your side, the debt collectors will pursue it and the debt will only increase as interest accumulates.
