Many thanks for all replies, I have just found the information I need on website                     startabusinessin france   which has very good information, as of last year all autoentrepreneurs if working in the building trade must by law carry a Decennal Insurance.

Check his siret number on infogreffe.  Ask to see his insurance.  Don't pay a deposit without a signed devis. Look at other work he has done.  Don't get caught out.  I don't think an auto-entreprenaur could do renovation works or work on a roof.  Specialised trade.

YES.  Never employ anyone who isn't insured.  Also, I didn't think that an auto-entrepreneur could do roofing works or building walls if they were over a certain height.  No doubt someone else will be able to give you some more info and keep you right.
