Thanks everyone for your helpful advice....Maybe we will look at this in another year's time - it seemed like a good idea when we discussed a few nights ago especially as we have friends in the UK who took this option to enhance their lifestyle. So once again thank you all.

Nothing like the UK schemes, not at all popular over here, from what I have heard you would be well advised to steer clear.

... you may stay in, rather than 'keep' the property, which has been definitively 'sold', (so it is really a 'bet' as to whether the person obliges by dying early or follows the example of Jeanne Calment!!).

You see quite a few viager on leboncoin. Usually seaside properties from what I've seen.

There is a Equity Release scheme in France called "Viager" ( google it and see) but it is a very small market (4000 sales a year) see this description at this link http://www.connexionfrance.com/explaining-the-viager-system-10211-news-article.html.

You keep the property, get a percentage of what it is worth and get paid a monthly sum for life. No escape once commited however.
