There is a charge for the main-levée d'une hypothèque after the reimbusement of a property loan, but I think it is automatically lifted after another year free of charges, (try a site like vosdroits.servicepublic) so go to your bank fully informed.  I think I got charged unnecessarily.

Once it is paid off, the Bank should request direct to the national mortgage register for your record of mortgage to be removed.  This may cost a little - your bank should have this in hand - but it is worth checking with them.  If you have an insurance to protect payments, that may finish or you may be able to continue with it?  Also, check your bank account to make sure standing orders are stopped.  Then get yourself a bottle of champagne and celebrate...
