thank you all. have noted those points. Tax Fon. is mandatory regardless of age. Tax Hab. depends on age and income - right ?

hazy2 - It is age-related as well.

From the official site:

Les personnes exonérées de taxe d'habitation

And a guide in English - see #9.1.4 - Exempted Persons

http://www.french-property.com/guides/france/finance-taxation/taxation/local-property-taxes/#9.1.

hazy2.

According to the localTresor when I have enquired on behalf of people who have not received a bill for Taxe Hab, they do not send out a statement. Of course that may not be the same in every dept in every region.

Taxe Fonciere is payable whatever your situation but Taxe d'Habitation payment is dependant on your income declared to Les Impots annually. If on a low income then you will not receive a bill, just a statement.  It is not age related, just income related.

As long as your income remains under a certain level you won't pay Tax Habitation. We didn't as my husband is over 65 but then received a bill this year and it's due to the exchange rate increasing the amount of euros we have as our income isn't that much more than last year. If the rate drops then we would qualify again.
