Fitter, thank you, that was a very interesting reply.  Sounds well worth going down that road before we think of changing companies.

We were recently in the same situation and went to discuss this with our local MMA office.

Just for asking they reduced the premium by €16 a month.

We then reduced the cover to exclude some dental and glasses.

They then suggested that if either of us were to be in the situation of being seriously ill we could just come in and increase the cover as and when we wanted it, the cover would have to run for a complete year though, They are not allowed to ask you why or about  prexisting conditions

Having moved here a year ago I was recommended 'Harmonie' and have found them to be excellent.

Keep all your insurances in 1 place, then every year ask for a print out of what you pay to take round other insurances, you will more than often be offered a better rate by your present insurers.
