Curry Cuisine do mail order if too far away to get to any of the markets or vide greniers that they have their stall at. or indeed any of the other places that people have mentioned. I have bought many of the spices from them that are mentioned in the thread including mixed spice. They do some of the spices whole too so you can grind them up yourself.

Thanks so much for your prompt and informative replies!   I shall go to Bel Asie next week and give it a try.  And, Plaia, your suggestion of "Les épices de Roellinger" is exactly right, too.  I have once had the enjoyment of eating at his restaurant, and so would have no doubts at all about the potential quality of the goods in his shop.  I'm really pleased I asked the question, so, thanks again.

You should go in St Malo where you can find a shop called "Les épices de Roellinger" (after the name of the famous cook). It is located in Intra Muros (in the old town) but you can find information on the website http://www.epices-roellinger.com/ It's a bit expensive but I recommend it for the quality of the spices.

There is a spice shop at Bellvue , Rennes called BelAsie - web site www.belasie.com

We go there a few times a year to stock up on all spices though I have never found pickling spices - these can be brought on line easily.

There are many people on Ebay selling a good range of spices and I often buy the less available ones there.  However, if you can find an Asian Supermarket near you (there is bound to be at least 1 in Rennes) they carry a huge range of spice which are often cheaper and better quality than supermarkets.  I know where the one is near us but that won't help you!

Googled it for you - look at this link - has opening times and address:
