A funny thing ....... NOT.......happened on our way to the closing of our Sale - the Notaire discovered that they had not included a specific and important document, so she canceled the 'closing.' Anticipating that by 11am we would have completed the sale, the roofers had set up their scaffolding the day before and were on site at 11 am ready to start work. When the Notaire canceled the 'closing' meeting, we explained the costly consequences of her action. She called us and the vendor to a meeting, at which she/we hoped that the vendor would sign a document to allow us to go ahead with work on the roof - we were going to sign the document to take full responsibility, should anything untoward happen. The vendor was happy to sign as long as he saw that the roofer had full and comprehensive insurance for himself and his staff who would work on the roof, and that the necessary certificates were available and had been issued to the roofer to show that he was qualified and trained to remove asbestos. After sitting in a meeting for over 2 hours, phoning the roofer and his insurance company and checking up on the roofer's credentials, it was discovered that he did NOT have the necessary qualifications/insurance for removing asbestos. He has worked in roofing in Brittany for 25 years, he has full insurance, but unfortunately, he does not hold that one cert for removing asbestos.  We were going to have to wait till we own the building before he started work.
Well, the Notaire managed to get the document she was missing and we did the closing, five days later, on Saturday. In the meanwhile, we called our very well informed Architect and asked him about our delemma. He told us that we apply for certain forms advising about removing asbestos, signing to take responsibility that said asbestos would be removed carefully and disposed of by a registered disposer of such material. The Architect sent us the forms, we signed and sent back. I called the local decheterie and found that there are two companies in St. Brieuc who dispose of asbestos. We ordered a skip that comes with a special bag in it. They deliver the skip and come back to pick it up. We are charged by the ton and for us, it will cost around €1,000 in all. The alternative is very serious legal charges which we have no wish to incur. We checked and understood that the roofer is insured and qualified, but if authorities call to the site, 'we' are the ones in the soup! However, now that we have the necessary documents to show, and the skip on site, there is nowt to fear. By way of warning just how serious the legal charges could be, we were shown wrists crossed over, as if in handcuffs........ LOL Some say that the 3% asbestos in these roof tiles is not as bad as the brown or blue asbestos, but when the government was categorising asbestos and its removal, it cast the same liability on all three types even though the latter two are far more dangerous.

When I had the same problem I was told at the local tip (Huelgoat) an individual (not business) can take a maximum of 12 sheets a year to the tip. Daft thing is nothing was said about the fact that you can drive through the town to the tip with them in a trailer uncovered.

we have tried St Jacut and Medrignac we were told we would have to take it to a private company in Dinan. Where is your decheterie?    Thanks Dawn
