Thanks for the answers, I thought I was going mad not being able to find it, would have been preferable to St Malo as Roscoff is only an hour from us.

BF are fitting exhaust gas (sulphur dioxide) cleaning systems to all of their ships. This is an old BBC page giving some details. A maritime law has become an European law intended to reduce the amount of sulphur in the channel.

This would mean stopping using the current cheaper heavy fuel oils and moving to diesel which costs around 40% more. To use a different fuel would mean changing the ships engines (very expensive on a built ship). BF have decided to "scrub" the exhaust gases produced using the heavy fuel oil.

I think it's been taken out of service for engine modifications, BF sent a news letter out a few weeks ago explaining  this, but the St Malo to Portsmouth service is still operating a few days per week, and it's not much if any further to Bristol from Portsmouth.
