Hi,

we have just come back from a day out there. Best views were at Tregnanton, could see 6 houses clearly, trees, locks and canal and views in two directions East and West. Parking easy, few minutes walk to lake. There are a couple of tents set up with seating where food and drinks can be bought and temporary public toliets. Also went to Anse de Sordan, view very good and the Merlin restaurant is always nice for a snack/ice cream. Parking free, didn't do the tours, but plenty of people were doing them. I am told it is very busy at the weekends so best go in the week as we did if you can. Excellent signposting on the approaches.

Yes you can  You are not obliged to pay and take a guided visit.  Best go before lunch as coaches arrive later (unless you want to be surrounded by sightseers)
