item on the beeb radio exhorted us all to set our alarms every day around 4.30 am to see Venus, plus Jupiter and Mars as close together as they can get, apparently the colours are to do with relections of their different types of atmospheres.  Lucky you had a clear sky!!

At this time of year (Autumn) you can see pulsating stars. the main ones are Mira, Algol and Delta Cephei. If you google it there will be several good sites to help explain them

It sounds as if It could be Jupiter, the smaller coloured ones being it's Galilean moons. Venus is also bright at the moment and Mars is there too, all very vivible early mornings t theis time of year
