"The signal strength seems to be unstable and can vary even as we watch it in set up mode!"

Is there any chance that there's a tree in the line of sight from this dish? sadly the reched things grow and what was not a problem last year can become one this.

Remember also that the signal used to tune the dish is a lot higher than some of the other signals for the channels you watch.

Check the socket in the wall first.

Hi

If your dish is easily and safely acessible you could try tweaking your dish to get the optimum signal.

This link explains how...it is for caravans but the principal is much the same....

And also this site will help your find the right direction...

The signal strength and quality should be far more than you have.

The signal strength seems to be unstable and can vary even as we watch it in set up mode!

Perhaps it dips and loses the signal, but has increased again when we switch to check the signal strength. Something is deifintely wrong somewhere.

Thank you bartyb.

We have a different dish for the TV in the kitchen, so OH has connected this dish to the box in the lounge (via a very long spare piece of cable) - success! Signal strength is 75% and quality is 90%.

So we now need to get to the bottom of the problem of the signal to the dish for the lounge ????

My first thought is the connection between the cable and the box. In the kitchen the cable is directly from the dish. In the lounge the cable runs from the dish, through the garage and outside wall, via a socket inside. I think the first step is to connect the dish directly to the box (through the window tomorrow) hopefully this will test the signal from the dish. We will then need to work out how to run a new cable directly from the dish to the lounge box.

Thanks again, and please correct me if my theory is flawed.

The trouble with digital signals is that the is a point that too low a signal means nothing on TV. You say that your normal (very low) signal strength is 30%, it could be that a percentage point or two below that is the threshold.

To start, those figures are very low, so your reception is marginal anyway.

Why you can have strength and quality and no signal, how long do you have?

The signals you recieve are divided into 4 groups: polarized (vertical and horizontal) and high and low band (the split being at around 11.5Ghz), The LNB can only send one group of signals to the Sky box and which is sent is swtched by the box

The default transponder for Sky is 12.129Ghz vertical, so high band vertical.

Most free UK TV is in the low band so your LNB may be breaking down and not switching correctly or the box may be packing up and not switching the LNB correctly.

BUT

we still come back to the fact that your signal levels are low.
