The dechetteries round my way take asbestos for free so may be the same where you are. There are special containers to deposit it in that are lined with plastic sheeting labelled "amiante". Not all have this facility though as will depend on the size of the dechetterie. Just make sure you wear gloves when handling.

If the sheets are whole put them on a pallet outside with a sign saying free sheets , I got rid of mine that way all gone in 2 days . If you take them to a dump you will have to pay for disposal and its not cheap..
