Can you remember how much they charged for this service please. Still have got no further so will phone Veolia but just wanted to know if it will cost us an arm and a leg! Many thanks.

I had the same problem , had an old fella from the SAUR come around with his long metal ear probe , he followed the water flow underground by listening to it , then found the leak and we dug it up and fixed it !!

Ultra sonic leak detection equipment, used in just the same as metal dector - in that you walk along with the dector just above surface and listen on headphones, equipment can be hired, don't have a clue where in France or get a specialist company in again you'll need to do a search in your local area.
