I would have thought it would be a good idea to get it serviced up by a qualified boiler engineer before striking it .

No. Looked a lot and found a lot of dubious sites that offered manuals for a fee. Bit too concerned to pass on payment details/download virus instead of manual!! Then, because we've been renovating the house, the problem went away. Burying one's head in the sand approach really. The house is in Britanny so hoped it might be a model locally sold.
