Most floats work by a ball or flap touching contacts to switch the pump on. When it drops the ball ''whatever' will fall away and break the contact and hence the power. With the power off at the mains trying a "gentle" tap on the float.

Hope this link works! http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/3f/Float_switch_on.jpg

or maybe the pipe has been dislodged (outflow?) hence water is pouring back in and pump is constantly on. it happened to ours, just a matter of rejoining the pipes

Hello green mile, firstly see if the float by the pump is stuck,if it isn't swich off at the mains a wait five minutes, then try again. If this fails it sounds like if you might need a new pump.

Good luck.
