The sole purpose of bleach is to kill bacteria.Bacteria are essential to the proper operation of a fosse septique They break down solids liquid waste and paper into gases water and leave a mud behind which sinks to the bottom of the fosse. The more bleach you put down the more bacteria you kill the less efficient your fosse. In addtion there are also bacteria in the pipes which digest hair soap etc and again bleach kills these bacteria so you then get a smell from your pipe so more bleach goes down and it is a vicious circle till the pipe blocks up.If you look in the cleaning area of the supermarket you will find numerous eclogical products for loos waste pipes etc. They are much cheaper over here than the UK.In addition put nothing down your fosse that cannot be broken down naturally and tell your guests not to do either. This includes condoms sanitary wear nappy liners cotton buds etc.Do not use luxury loo paper  2 ply is fine. Also do not use washing powder as it is made from animal fat which will seperate out and block pipework-use liquids instead and do not flush large amounts of animal fat down the sink. You can use a product to help your fosse along and if you have a grease trap buy a special product to help break down the grease or you will have a horrible smelly job in cleaning it out Lastly remember that what goes down will come out on your land or in a watercourse so if it cannot be broken down it will pollute your land.

Now you will be inundated by people telling you to use bleach as they have been using it for years etc...

Go into any French supermarket and read the labels on the many brands of toilet cleaners.  You will find that most of them will say "fosse friendly" or something like that.  Bleach is cheaper of course but you should use as little as possible for the reasons mentioned above.  It kills the useful bacteria that make the fosse work properly.

Hi, the only "bleach" product we use is Domestos.  They claim it is safe for septic systems.

You can use some bleach down the toilet but helps to use stuff like Tarax  or yoghurts to keep the microbial mix in the tank up.  If you read the back of toilet cleaner labels you will see some are suitable for septic tanks, and most/all supermarkets have an eco section too.
