thanks everyone I wonder if the bicarb and tin foil have any bad effects on the silver plate? It really worked well - one canteen of cutlery is lovely and shiny again.

Didn't think to look in Bricomarche.

silver dip contains a mild acidic chemical. It is nasty horrible stuff for silver or silver plate. Sure it gets things nice and shiny but it creates a microscopic porous surface which thus creates faster tarnishing. Stick with hot water and mild detergent then polish with a clean dry cloth. :)

Starwax - nettoyage express, argent - or

Large tub, same process as Silver Dip.

I think I bought it in our local Bricomarché but I'm sure you will find it elsewhere. (eg Castorama)

Problem sorted - looked on the web and wrapped the forks in a piece of foil poured boiling water over them with bicarbonate of soda and they are perfect.
