Lumbersexual, of course I got some quotes ( per your suggestion on a previous post)

I enjoyed using the machine and had the time to do it.  I would agree that using professionals is often, but not always, the right thing to do when using heavy machinery, or dangerous activity that uses specialised skills ( grimpage for example).

How do you know it was cheaper?

Did you get some quotes?

A professional machine and operator could have easily despatched these stumps in under an hour in comparison to your hire machine.

I hired this from Kiloutou, Lorient recently As mentioned above it is not self propelled, but if you are reasonably fit no problem. It cost me approx €220 for the day, and I easily dealt with 8 smallish stumps in only 3 hours.  Much cheaper than a contractor, but could be difficult/dangerous if no common sense exercised.

Thanks for replying with the information. I think I will pass on the idea of a stump grinder, I did not realise they would be so expensive and so difficult to use.

Thanks again, much appreciated.

The hire companies are around 200euros per day for a truly horrible machine.

Typical hire beast is 18hp weighing 200kg and NOT self propelled either.

Consumes 3 litres petrol per hour and almost always comes with blunt teeth.

If you hit stone or are clumsy with the teeth and take the edge off then you will need a special diamond grinding wheel in order to put an edge back on.

If you've never used one before you will be in for a shock, physically and financially.

Even the Pros generally prefer to use an independant grinding service.

 Regards

Jack

Big heavy brutal noisy machine - I hired one years ago in the UK.

Loxam have one on their website - by the look of the cost it could be as cheap to have a contractor come round and do the work.
