Thanks very much guys, there has indeed been a satisfying amount of squashing going on here and will probably follow up with spray as well.

They are probably the adults of woodworm as Dueller as said and their sole raison d'être is to produce the next generation so they need killing asap-they make a satsfying crunchy noise when squashed which is the simplest and cheapest method

Depending on how tiny they are, they could be emerging woodworm. Google images of woodworm to identify them. Don't panic if they are. You can buy sprays from the local brico to kill them. The best defence however is dry wood. The larva get all their intake from moisture in the wood and do  not last long if rooms are kept well aired and dry.
