The microchip can be read with any reader  but the number wouldn't appear on the UK database and vet in the UK wouldn't know the origin of the chip number - eg France, Germany, Italy, etc.

Does the same same apply the other way round? i.e. dogs with French chips can't be read in the UK

Your vet will sort it for you.  From memory it was easy, quick and not expensive.

You must have your pets' chip number registered with the French database -easily done at the vets- because should your pet go missing and its chip be read at a dog pound etc they will be unable to trace the animal via the uk database. Their machine will simply tell them that the pin is not recognized. An experienced operator may notice that it is a UK chip, but that's all. It's a disgrace considering that most UK residents get a chip and passport because they intend to travel with their pets, but the situation remains that once your pet leaves the UK it cannot be traced by its chip without registering that chip number with the country you are in. The chip only serves to tie the animal to the documentation you carry which obviously has the number written inside.
