thanx for those ideas. As i am on crutches i just need a small version to avoid carrying handbags etc so will not be carrying big loads - maybe i'll get 2 small packs ! Now just thought of that.

Usually the hotel staff are most happy to port small hold-alls from carboot to room - but in town shopping is problematic  :-P

If it's a larger one make sure it fits in such  way that the load is transferred to your hips, not back, and that the waist trap is comfortable with an large easy to adjust buckle.

Some backpacks are waterproof, most are not. Some have waterproof linings, others integral waterproof covers. Waterprooff is a misleading term in any event.

Some have zips that enable you to access the contents in places other than the top.

Most packs have black linings which makes it difficult to see the contents in low light.

The structure of the pack should keep it away from your clothing at the shoulder blades for comfort.
