Moscowgaffe, are you really sure that the fosse is not connected, could the pipe coming out be the vent?

Fosse Septique New regs are very strict. Soil absorbotion tests have to be carried out to decide size of filter bed. In my case the nearest company (to Vire) was in Caen and the cost is currently 479 euros. For a three bed house, in my case, the bed is 8 metres by 12 metres. The hole they dig takes 60 tons of gravel plus sand, miles of piping etc.It is not permissable to grow anything except grass over this area.In your case a vent pipe will probably be necessary and some areas are insisting on a "spinner" on top of the vent.I have heard rumours that in the south fosse filter beds have to be replaced every ten years.(Where do they send 60 tons of fouled gravel?)It would be worth checking before you do anything because, as I understand it some work is retrospective.
