It's the first time I've heard of any such restrictions with French insurers. I know that a lot of UK insurers have clauses in their policy restricting you to 30 days or 90 days or whatever number they picked out of their hat, but AFAIK most French insurers don't count the time you spend in and out of France. Mine doesn't, certainly. So you will have to negotiate this with your own insurer. In any case you would be covered for 3rd party risks by law, so you would be legal, but not covered for theft etc if your policy says you're not. I think you need to change insurers.

There is no way you will get a French CT anywhere other than at a CT station in France. The test has to be recorded on a computer with a live link to the national database. Looks like a case of bad forward planning - after all you do know 2 years in advance when the CT will run out, and you can have it done as far in advance as you like, so why not get it done before you go?
