Have done this hundreds of times ( well not quite, but many)

Le Mans, Tours, Loches, Chatoureaux, Clermont Ferrand, St Etienne, Col de La Republic, Annonay,Tournan.
Then you can choose to keep to the autoroute via Orange, Aix etc or
Go across at L'Oriel, Crest, Die, Col ? into the Durance, Sisteron, Digne les Bains, & follow the Var down to Nice.
It is the same distance as Calais to Nice.
Nice drive, St Etienne is about halfway.
Good autoroute from North of Le Mans to south of Tours.
Best of luck.
