Hi MikeP - yes they use a very similar business model to the EasyJets and Basiq Airs of this world. As the demand starts to exhaust the supply the prices rocket exponentially. However - even a month ahead and a week rental with Sixti is showing around €75 (with insurance) whereas the big boys are quoting no less than double that. However on the day I'd expect Sixti to be double the big boys' prices.

Easycar and Sixti are often not cheaper than the 'conventional' companies, espcially if you book late.

Remember also that car rental companies have 'corporate' rates and are always ready to negotiate except at peak times.  When booking,  if you say ' do you have corporate rates for ........ (any large company you care to name) ... they will invariably give you that rate without even asking you if you actually work for that company!

Although it is not illegal to do this (as long as you don't tell a porky pie!), there is a risk inherent,  which I should point out,  which is that many corporate rates include insurance.  If you have an accident and are then discovered not be an employee of the company,  the insurers will almost certainly repudiate the claim.  So make sure you take out all the voluntary insurances - which might bring the rate up to or close to the public rates.

Also a lot of car companies gives discounts if you are a member of an airline Frequent Flyer scheme,  and some of those rates are  excellent.

Aha - Interesting to know! Thanks martinb.

So it looks like Sixti.de are the only "low cost" company left up there now.

They joined up with Europcar.

Most probably because Easy Rent a Car could not get parking space for their cars on Schiphol Airport and because of that they were not really in Amsterdam but closer to Zaandam. Normally about 15 minutes away but with al the traffic jams in the Netherlands it turned out to be over an hour most of the time. So, a big disaster.

Europcar does have space on Schiphol, so this could be the reason.
