You can definitely get a one-way rental within France, so how about:

Rent the van in Calais (for example)

Drive it across to your UK pickup point for loading

Drive it down to Nice, then drop it off at the local depot

Still a pain, but better than an extra 750 miles in a van!

Why not try groupage with a large removel firm who collect (in your UK collection area)and drop in  Nice, I did it and was far easier.

One way or the other you're going to have to do an empty run.

If you rent in france then drive to england, load up and return, you will have the advantage of a lhd vehicle which makes a load of difference when you stop and pay on the autoroute, unless of course you have a passenger who is not asleep.

To offset the cost of moving an empty van you can always post a message and find someone who might be prepared to chip in for a few cubic metres of space.

A couple of years ago I tried this and called every rental firm in the UK Yellow pages. It's not possible. I had to take the van back to the uk after unloading. Pain in the neck, I know.
