No, his UK insurance won't cover a French registered vehicle.  He will drive it on your policy, with any excess to pay if there are limitations of who may drive it should he be involved in an accident. Normally these only apply to people who are under 25 or have had their licences suspended or cancelled at any time. (The latter to avoid people who've been banned from getting insured via someone else's policy and thus avoiding a massive cost to themselves.)

Read your policy's small print and you'll see if any excess applies for an over 25 with no bans.
