Have a look here: http://riviera.angloinfo.com/countries/france/cartegrise.asp
There you will see that you do not have to "send in" the Carte Grise. Instead you should do as said in the above reference, bar it and hand it to the purchaser.
You are however supposed to send in the sale document (certificat de cession).

vermay, French cars to not a 'log book' in the same way that UK cars do (or had). The process of selling a car here is well explained in the INFOrmation section of Anglo Info. Navigate to this section, and then to 'cars bikes and driving'. You will see there the information you need, and you will see that you do have to send in the Carte Grise so that ownership may pass from you to the new owner. Good luck. .
