Miles/Kilometer Conversion sticker

Hi there,

Having reluctantly come back to Blighty - trying to register my much loved french Renault Megane to English but have been quoted ridiculous sums by Renault to change speedometer and to dip headlights to left.

I intend to shop around for more quotes but wondered if anyone any experience or recommendations to pass on?  A friend thinks its possible to buy a conversion sticker for the speedometer - is this legal enough and does anyone know where I can source them?

Thanks in advance for any advice,

Blondeclutz

I agree with Mike about secondhand car pricing UK vs France -it does seem that cars have a longer life over here!! -perhaps the CT isnt so strict.

If the speedo etc is electronic it may be possible to reprogram from kms to miles -there are many companies listed on the web e.g. http://www.speedofixer.co.uk/renault.htm See also http://www.dvla.gov.uk/vehicles/exptimpt.htm for the official rules on imports.

Perhaps one of the companies who import used japanese cars to the UK will be able to help you as they have to carry out this conversion on all their cars. Whether there is one to roughly fit the megane or not I don't know.

If you go to http://www.megaboost.co.uk/mr2/frames/importguide.htm you could try some of the links at the bottom of the page, I'm sure one of them will be able to help.

Your other option would be to find a crashed UK megane and ask a friendly local garage to change the clock over for you, although this will falsify the mileage, but remember that your existing clock will seem to show that it has a ratio of 8:5 MILES on it in the UK and really it's just KMS.

Lastly I wouldn't bother with this. You will lose so much money when the time comes to sell in the UK. You Brits hate imports (although 89% of all the cars are imports anyway) from Japan and Europe and you will only get roughly 55-70% of the UK market price for the equivalent Renault imported official UK vehicle. Even less if the vehicle has ben tampered with. Add to that the cost of a UK second hand megane is generally a lot cheaper than to buy one in France where the prices seem artificially high for some unknown reason.

Regards,

Mike
