unless you have a cherished UK number you cannot live without, in which case you just have to make the trip back every year.

Totally illegal!

You are not supposed to re-register it if you're a French resident, it's a legal requirement.

You are supposed to re-register it in France if you are living here. however, if you travel back to the UK regularly, you could probably get away with keeping it on UK plates - and the MOT would not be a problem. But re-registering it would leave you with a french registered Rhd vehicle which would be worth very little; you would do better to take it back, mot it, sell it and fly back here and buy another similar car without the hassel of changing lights etc. just to get it registered.
