I was curious to know if non EU citizens are able to obtain a french drivers licence? Does one need to show a carte de sejour or is it simply a case of showing your passport, passing the test and paying your way?

Any advice much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

One would have to wonder why on earth you would want a French permis de conduire if you don't have a carte de séjour?  Or have I misunderstood your question?

Hi Smiley

I presume you already have a licence from another country outside the EU. If so, it depends where it's from. Many countries (and some US states) have an exchange agreement with France where you just fill in a few forms and an official translation of your licence) and you are issued with a French licence in exchange for your other one. (So long as you apply within a year of getting your residency). Otherwise, you have to do the full test as if it were your first time.
