Just read a load of stuff on the internet and, according to most, buying a cheap VCR is probably not the solution as it just passes Secam straight through. It depends on your TV whether it can handle it.

All DVD players output PAL over here though.

Because the output of a VCR is PAL.

Why would a cheap Secam VHS player help? Surely the output from that will be Secam too. I wish it would work, as it's exactly what I need too!

NZ in common with the rest of the civilised world use the PAL TV system.  France and some of its colonies and ex-colonies use SECAM,  and guess what?  It's not compatible.

The US and some other countries use NTSC which has limited compatibility with PAL.

Therefore if you want to enjoy the thrills of French terrestrial TV, you need to do exactly what Pepe said.  That should work - not guaranteed.

Long term, probably better to buy a TV locally but make sure it is PAL/SECAM (most of them are) so that you can watch PAL videos and satellite.

Buy a cheap French VCR and use it as the SECAM tuner.
