Both my children have British passports and carte identité, and my eldest cast her vote in the last elections, it was easy and makes life simplier for driving etc, as for the comment re "unless they want to be in the police or something" EU citizens can become public servants with tenure without changing to french nationality as long as you fufill the criteria (diploma's, etc) .

I just read the link properly and apparently it is automatic when they reach 18 if they were born here and fulfill the conditions, I didn't realise that. So in fact it should be easy for them to get carte d'identités, sounds like a good idea.

I can't think of any circumstances when their  British passports wouldn't do the trick.

They can apply for French nationality if they wish but it isn't necessary, unless they want to join the police or something. Details of the application process and how long it takes are at http://vosdroits.service-public.fr/particuliers/F295.xhtml
