Hi there

 Same thing happened to me, you do need a birth cert in french, make sure also the birth cert as your parents details on there as well....

i sent in the other one, paid 35 euros only to be told "wrong one", also the bigger one (parents details) will be about 60 euros...!!! hope that helps

It didn't always used to be necessary, but more and more people seem to be being required to provide translations by a certified translator (traducteur assermenté). There are plenty of translators who offer this service, by post if needs be. If you're feeling lucky, you could always wait and see if you're asked, and hope you'll be one of the few who get away without. But if they do ask for a translation, you will have to get one.
